General Information
'Bertie, The house keeper'
We will discuss the exact requirements when you make contact with us, however as a guide we expect the following...
We don’t rehome single rabbits on their own because they are sociable animals and prefer the company of one of their own kind.
There are ongoing costs of vaccinations, which must be done for myxomatosis twice a year and VHD once a year. Cost around £50 per rabbit.
A large hutch is essential (at minimum, a two-level 5ft wide x 2ft deep or 6ft wide x 2ft deep single level one with around 2ft of height on each level).
A run so that they can browse your lawn, minimum dimensions are 6ft x 3 ft x 2 ft high.
Alternative arrangements required for house bunnies. Small breeds may find it difficult to climb ramps, so a single story hutch is preferable.
We ask for a donation of £50 for each bunny. They are all neutered and have up to date vaccinations so at least £90 of veterinary fees has been spent on each bunny.
We will arrange a home visit so that we can be sure that you have suitable housing etc, and advise on dietary needs. The check is not to ‘catch you out’ but is purely to ensure the bunny has a good life after it leaves us!
Some rabbits do not like being carried - in the wild they are only carried by a predator so can be difficult to handle - We will tell you as much as I can about each bunny e.g. temperament etc.
Bunnies are easy to train to use a litter tray, but will wreck a house if they get bored so will need to be kept in a large area and have lots of things (wood chews, pipes etc) to keep them occupied and to deter them from eating your furniture etc!!
Rabbit adopters must be over 16 years of age
If you are looking for a companion for an existing rabbit , we offer to take in your bunny for 5-7 days and complete the bonding on neutral territory. In that way you can be sure that they get on well, and are not stuck with 2 bunnies that hate each other and have to be kept separately in hutches.
Finally . . . . . they can live for 10-12 years so are a real long term commitment. This is important as most of the bunnies that we get are only about 12-18 months old, and a lot come into care because their owners are unable to continue with the ongoing cost and commitment of keeping their bunny.
